Tympanometry & Acoustic Reflex Threshold Testing

Ear Anatomy
What is tympanometry and acoustic reflex threshold testing?
Did you know that the smallest muscles and bones in your entire body are located inside of your ears? Tympanometry and acoustic reflex threshold testing measures the function and health of the middle ear space where those muscles and bones are located. Tympanometry specifically measures the function and health of the eardrum. It will tell us if there is fluid in the middle ear space or if there is a hole or restriction in the eardrum. Acoustic reflex threshold testing measures the function of the tensor tympani and the stapedius muscles in the middle ear, which contract in response to loud sound. When contracted, they stiffen the ossicles (middle ear bones) and the eardrum to lessen the transmission of loud sound through the middle ear system into the inner ear where the hearing organ is located. The acoustic reflex is believed to be our body’s way of protecting our hearing from loud sounds.
