What to Expect During Your Hearing Evaluation

If you’re scheduled for a hearing test at Custom Ear Solutions, here’s what you can expect. Our goal is to make the process as comfortable and informative as possible, so you leave with a clear understanding of your hearing health.

Did you know that humans can hear from 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz? At Custom Ear Solutions, because we prioritize comprehensive evaluations, we offer extended high-frequency pure tone audiometry, which allows us to evaluate your hearing up to 18,000 Hz. Most clinics test up to 8,000 Hz, but we test up to 18,000 Hz. This allows us to diagnose hearing loss sooner and implement strategies to prevent loud sound-induced hearing loss in musicians, firearm users and others that are regularly loud sound-exposed.

This testing reveals the TYPE of hearing loss that you have.

- Sensorineural: Hearing loss that results from damage to or degradation of the inner ear where the hearing organ and hearing nerve are located. This is the most common type of hearing loss.
- Conductive: Hearing loss that results from a problem in the ear canal and/or middle ear system.
  - Earwax occlusion
  - Eardrum disease
  - Middle ear fluid
- Mixed: Hearing loss that results from outer, middle and inner ear disease.

Even though we are not fitting you with hearing aids, the information from a hearing evaluation is still incredibly valuable. Here’s how we may use it:

Baseline Monitoring

Establishing a baseline of your hearing health allows us to track changes over time and identify potential issues early.

Hearing Protection

If your evaluation indicates normal hearing sensitivity but you’re at risk for damage due to loud sound exposure, we can recommend custom hearing protection tailored to your needs.

Workplace or Recreational Guidance

We can advise on safe listening practices, especially if your hobbies or work involve exposure to loud sound.

Preventive Care

The results help us to suggest strategies or tools to maintain your current level of hearing.

Communication Strategies

If hearing challenges exist, we can provide strategies to improve communication between you and others. If you are a hearing aid candidate, we can refer you to another audiologist for a hearing aid consultation if you're interested.

Referrals

If our evaluation reveals medical conditions that require the attention of a physician or another specialist, we can refer you for further evaluation.
