Types of hearing protection

Earplugs

Small devices inserted into the ear canal to block or reduce the intensity of sound entering the ears. Earplugs are commonly made from materials like foam or silicone.

PROs

Protection: Foam can provide the most attenuation (i.e. reduction in sound) of all types of hearing protection when fitted properly
Low cost: Foam earplugs can be purchased in bulk at a relatively low cost

CONs

Not reusable: Foam earplugs get dirty quickly if you have a lot of earwax
Contact with hands: Not a great option if your hands are dirty, as you have to compress them with your fingers before inserting into ear canals
Discomfort: Because foam earplugs expand in the ear canals, they exert higher pressure on the ear canals, which can cause soreness with long duration use
Insertion: Timely and more difficult to insert (i.e. compress, pull ear up and back, massage into ear canal until flush with opening of ear canal)
Regular use can cause earwax buildup
Distortion: Solid foam or silicone earplugs muffle the sound quality of music or speech, so they’re not a great option for concerts or communication
